A Vitamin D supplement of 400 IU is recommended by the Canadian Paediatric Society for babies who are breastfed.
Once an infant starts solid foods, they will receive some vitamin D from food.
For breastfed infants under 1 year, vitamin D supplementation should continue until the infant’s diet includes 400 IU of vitamin D.
At about one year of age most babies are eating a variety of foods from all food groups and are drinking approximately two cups (500 mL) of cow’s milk each day. At this time, a vitamin D supplement is no longer needed.
