THE BREASTFEEDING CHALLENGE 2008

Niagara’s 3nd Annual Breastfeeding Challenge, which took place on Saturday,October 11th, 2008
in the Sears Court at the Pen Centre, was a HUGE success!!
Mom’s, babies, toddlers, supportive parents, dad’s, friends, professionals and media came from allover the region to celebrate the women in Niagara
who choose to breastfeed their babies with the
hope to create a more tolerant society toward breastfeeding in the public.
The morning was filled with lots of socializing, activities for the children,
cake and refreshments and some wonderful guest speakers.
Dr. Andrea Feller - Associate Medical Office of Health
(and mom participating in the challenge),
a Public Health Nurse, a representative from the La Leche League and
a representative from Niagara Health System all shared their enthusiasm
with the challenge and how important it is to promote, protect and
support in breastfeeding in Niagara.  At 11:00am we had 52 babies
latch on to breastfeed. The Niagara Region ranked among one of the top regions
in Ontario for the most babies latched on at 11:00am local time.
This event celebrates breastfeeding and demonstrates
promotion, protection and support for breastfeeding women
and their families. It’s a chance for education and peer support prepared
in a fun and social way.
This annual event, named "Quintessence breastfeeding challenge"
and organized by "Quintessence Foundation,"
was meant to send the message that mothers should be able to
breastfeed wherever necessary rather than feeling forced to find the nearest washroom.
Would you want to eat your lunch in a bathroom?
6,875 mothers joined together across the world for the event.
Niagara’s site ranked 24rd out of 288 sites across the world
and 17th out of 168 sites in Canada.
A big thank you to all those who participated and showed their support
for this very important event!
